SG-1000 Best Game/Worst Game?
Post Posted: Sat Mar 26, 2005 3:54 am
I know these best game debates probably do the rounds from time to time on these forums but...

Like a lot of SMS fans who did not live in a region where the SG-1000 sore the light of day I have only come to play the games for the first time through emulation and not when I was younger and wide eyed. So I tend not to have a soft spot for it like I do for the SMS, but I have a week-off coming up and want to give it a chance, I mean what’s the point in me trying to maintain a complete ROM-set for it, if I'm never going to play them?

I have given a few of the games a quick 10-second blast, but with out the connection with my youth or knowledge of what’s good, or what was hyped at the time I just don't have the enthusiasm. Having said that I did give H.E.R.O a few minutes of my time, which I'm a fan off on other systems anyway and Black Onyx seemed quite nifty from the outset.

So what would be very cool to know is:

What everyone’s favourite SG-1000 game?

What was likely to be the best selling SG-1000 game?

Are there any SG-1000 games that should be avoided?

Plus should ColecoVision games be included in this debate?

My favorite is Gulkave, a very hard shooter by Compile. It feels very much like a Horizontal Aleste game.

Other good ones are Chack n Pop, Girl's Garden, Pitfall, and Champion Billiards.

Worst SG 1000 game I've played is probably Pop Flamer. Was incredibly frustrating.

My personal selection from MEKA.TXT:

- Sega Game 1000:
- The Castle
- H.E.R.O.
- Ninja Princess
- Pitfall II

Forgot to mention Monaco GP which I like, althought it's quickly repeatitive.

Other good/decent games: Choplifter, Championship Lode Runner, Dragon Wang, C_So, Doki Doki Penguin Land (but rather play the SMS version), Gulkave.

Anyway. The Castle is an excellent puzzle/action, once you start figuring out "the big picture" out of it and get after the first third/half of the game.

Of the dozen or so I've got/played, I'd have to pick Flicky as my favourite. Then again, I'm a Flicky-junkie anyway ;)

Did you know there was an official remake for mobile phones? Take a look at this site, under Lord Monarch, next to Bokosuka Wars.

The Mega-CD "can" thing you mean?

Wow, that's very nice to hear. Funny that I actually went to this page in the past but missed this picture.

This game is nazi-difficult, I wonder if people would actually want to complete it on a cell phone.

Here's the picture link btw, for people who does not know what The Castle looks like:

I guess it's the same thing, since the GameCan is a compilation of SegaNet games. The standalone MD version was released at Sonic CulT some time ago, and came from the Japanese Gamehompo service.

GoodGen now recognizes it as "Doki Doki Penguin Land (J)".

Best game? Probably Gulkave. It's one of those rare horizontal Compile shootings.

I've never found any SG-1000 games that held my attention for long. Maybe I'll try a few suggested in this thread.

Girl's Garden is just so weird that I can't help but play it from time to time.
