I have 2 copies of Rocky for SMS, opened them up just to take a look and was surprised to see how different the PCB was for each game. What does it mean when there's different PCBs for the same game? Images attached.
All games over 32KB require some extra functionality to allow the system to select the data it accesses. Most games do this by adding the extra stuff into the same chip as the data (one chip version) but some do it by having a "mapper" chip alongside the "ROM" chip. The latter can be modified ("cartmods") to replace the ROM with a different game.
