World Grand Prix alternate revision
Post Posted: Fri Apr 12, 2019 6:03 pm
I recently got my European cartridge dumped, which matches the known mpr-11074 data, and then I noticed that there's another one listed here with a chip marked as "mpr-10156".

Is this version currently "Missing In Action"?

No, it's well known.

The classification is hard. Meka says:

SMS 7b369892 1624A9110762168D World Grand Prix/COUNTRY=US,BR,KR/PRODUCT_NO=5080,?,GB-1304/COMMENT=Export version of "The Circuit". Also used in Brazilian and Korean version.
SMS 4aaad0d6 761980092FA9EA26 World Grand Prix/COUNTRY=EU,IT/PRODUCT_NO=5080/COMMENT=Export version of "The Circuit".

Oddly MAME lists different MPR numbers for these ROMs, with the same CRC32.

I fixed the mistake in MAME's softlist yesterday, now it has the following verified versions of the game:

<rom name="mpr-11074.ic1" size="131072" crc="4aaad0d6" sha1="650f15ebbd149f5c357f089d7bd305fcb20b068f" offset="000000" />
<rom name="mpr-10151.ic2" size="131072" crc="7b369892" sha1="feff411732ca2dc17dab6d7868749d79326993d7" offset="000000" />

But no "MPR-10156", which Meka doesn't seem to have, either?

OT regarding Sega MPR part numbers, due to referring to MD games.

MPR-13310-S67 = FireShark (USA) Bad checksum version (ROM date 9038). There seems to be two versions of this, and it's not known which is considered "correct". This one zero-ed a block of data and I don't know if anyone bothered to figure out the significance of it.
MPR 13909-SM = Fire Mustang (Japan)

You're right, Bock's dumping logs don't have MPR-10156. The wiki page history says that number came from Enri, who is in Japan so you might think it odd to use the western name. Enri's site seems unavailable now to see if that was the source.

Ah, so it might be the chip inside "The Circuit".

It's been down since 2015, we need to locate a copy of the game and check for ourselves.

Tried dumping the contents of the chip directly? Are there pics of the board available somewhere?

Is there something wrong with that dump, too?

As to FireShark, it was my personal dump so I could find the cart and take a photo.

No, Fire Mustang was just the one other game I had MPR recorded for. (as Japanese carts cover the screws with the caution sticker so it's more of an effort to record them without cosmetic damage) I just recorded that one because it had arrived with the screws already exposed.

Oh, yeah, and a "new in box Asian region" Genesis 6-Pak I bought. Kinda skeptical if it was legit. Being a smaller than normal box (I don't have any to compare to, but I'd estimate maybe the same form factor as a Game Gear game box, particularly the purple hangtab ones) with some cheap-looking cover art with no manual. It looks like an exported US cart (with original label, with ESRB rating and Sega of America hints hotline intact) with an additional "Sega Genuine" sticker on the back. With being skeptical, I just cut through the sticker with a screwdriver to open and check, that yeah it probably is a real US cart at least. Doesn't sound even that implausible that Sega would export, maybe some old stock, to repackage and sell cheaper abroad?

You mean this one? https://segaretro.org/File:6Pak_MD_Asia_Box_Front.jpg

Would be very useful if you could provide pics of the boards as well as their respective dump checksums, for all three cartridges.
