Games & Games Releases

This thread is about discussing the information referred to as "Games" and "Games Releases" in our Wiki structure. Note that most other information of the site are related to Games (eg: cheats code, screenshots, scans, credits, music, etc.) but are out of the scope of this thread (those sub sections have dedicated forum threads).

Short definition

Games
Basic information defining a unique game accross all versions and countries. Surprisingly this contains few information:
- This is where we define the master name that is used for creating URLs and referring to a game from other contents.
- Contains reference to Developer, Publisher, Platform, First release date, ROM/data size, Peripheral, Number of players, Genre.
- Contains a sets of tags that we use to mark games. See tags to get an idea of the marker we created so far.
>> View a page source (eg: http://wip2.smspower.org/Games/AlexKiddInMiracleWorld-SMS?action=source :) to see how this is internally structured.

For convenience purposes, for now there will be 1 Game entry for a game released in Japan and Europe/US even with a different name, unless there's major differences between the versions.
eg: Quartet and Double Target share the same Game entry and page.
eg: Anmitsu Hime and Alex Kidd: High Tech World have *different* Game entries, because they are judged too different.
eg: Asterix and TV Colosso have *different* Game entries, because the later is a hack of the original that was done in a different context (not the same developers, country).

Games Releases
Identify a single easily identifiable release of the game. Each region of the world has its own release data, and sometime a single region may have more than one. This is how we will identify packaging variations and re-releases among other things.
- Contains product code, release date (if known), type of media (cartridge, card, etc. including the shape and color of label), and weither this version of the game support FM music playback.
>> View a page source (eg: http://wip2.smspower.org/Games-Releases/AlexKiddInMiracleWorld-SMS-US?action=sou... :) to see how this internally structured.

The aggregation of those data will later permit to automatically generate lists of all kinds. For example, the old smsall.txt / smsallj, txt documents could be regenerated from those data with different amount of customization: some people may care about knowing all minors variations of all games, while other may be interested in just a simple list of games released in the United States, for example.

Most other information on the site will be linked a Game (eg: cheats, credits) and some information (eg: scans) will be linked to a Game Release.

Status
Taking note here of the overall status. This is a rough indicator to find out at glance what area need works. 100% means that an area is basically complete but the data can always be fixed, modified and improved later on.
Filling up the Releases information will probably take some time.

Master System : Games 100%, Releases 0%
Game Gear : Games 10%, Releases 0%
SG-1000,OMV: Games 100%, Releases 0%
SC-3000: Games 0%, Releases 0%
SF-7000: Games 0%, Releases 0%

Here are the little icons that we created to identify the media type of a game release. This is still work in progress, some may be missing or their look improved later. Let us know if you find one type missing.

Is it possible to query the game list by rom size ? Just like the index sorted by release year.

Thanks.

Every game page has a Size variable embedded, which you search using the $: prefix, thus:

http://www.smspower.org/Games/Index?group=Games&fmt=%23gameslist&action=...

We need to standardise this a bit, though (e.g. some are Kbits, some are KBytes), and there are weird cases like games with multiple ROM sizes.

I have continued to add Games-Releases/ entry during the past year.

Those should be mostly done as for the listing, still missing a bunch of cartridge/media icons and product number:

http://www.smspower.org/Games-Releases/SMS-JP
http://www.smspower.org/Games-Releases/SC-JP
http://www.smspower.org/Games-Releases/GG-EU
http://www.smspower.org/Games-Releases/GG-US
http://www.smspower.org/Games-Releases/GG-JP
http://www.smspower.org/Games-Releases/GG-BR
http://www.smspower.org/Games-Releases/SG-EU

More recently I've been adding TecToy SMS games from my collection:

http://www.smspower.org/Games-Releases/SMS-BR

This is undoubtedly missing a lot of entries, I will catch up with the more accurate TecToy releases lists.

Asian releases (very loose list for now)
http://www.smspower.org/Games-Releases/SG-TW
http://www.smspower.org/Games-Releases/SMS-KR

Now obviously I need to start tackling the SMS-EU and SMS-US lists which are amusingly near empty.

"Zillion II with JASRAC sticker"
I've seen on like a billion Japanese games on other consoles, all of them I can remember based on licenses (anime, etc.)
Was it originally sold like that, or could that have been a copy imported from the US to Japan and resold there? Because I don't think I've seen it on a single US release of a Japanese-license game.
And from what little I can read about it, it's some sort of licensing body within Japan?

They handle music rights, they are basically a giant widespread mafia tying artists once they signed, collecting fees down to the slightest infraction (playing a track in a public place). The binding points that comes with it licensing music from Japan is rather complex (france has a similar system with the SACEM). For various reason it still make sense for most artists to sign up with the union so they are still around.

Yes sorry the Brasilian releases haven't been really added. I just had a first pass adding most games from my collection, but need to consult documents and pictures for the rest.

Sorry if this ins't true or accurate, but wasn't Mortal Kombat released for Game gear (along with the Mega Drive, Game Boy and Super N*******o in Europe and USA on "Mortal Monday" (Monday, September 13, 1993)?

I'm asking this question because I see the Releases list doesn't have the date. Was it really availabe that very same day or was it just marketing BS?

I don't see this version of Tetris listed in the SMS games section. It looks different from FA Tetris - at least in the information layout. It seems to be a conversion of Sega Tetris from the arcade. It has the same horrendous music. I think Super Tetris is mentioned somewhere on this site but it doesn't seem to be listed.

I think we're not sure how to classify it, it seems to be a Korean Game Gear original which is a bit weird, but it's hard to be sure.

I'll add it. I think at the time there was the assumption that the game existed in Korea on the Master System but I have never seen it. I've only seen it as a Game Gear cart.

This thread suggest that the existing ROM wouldn't work as in on the SMS anyway. I forgot if it has been confirmed that would happen when using port $10/$18 on a GG.

Which I have dumped and confirmed.

And

Which is possibly the same game but I am not sure?

Some of the ascii strings in the ROM..

Sorry for the bump, but I have a bit of information I can add. :) I first came across this thread when searching for information on a weird Tetris arcade bootleg; it displays "Weston Analog" in the copyright info, so this thread came up in the search.

As it turns out, that arcade bootleg is based on one of the many ports of Sega's arcade Tetris; the original System 16 version was popular enough that the game was ported to other hardware to keep up with demand. Specifically, "Weston Analog" Tetris is a bootleg of the Sega System E port of Tetris, which is a Sega Master System based arcade board.

This ties a lot of loose ends together with regards to "Super Tetris." The title screen, palette, and background art is changed, but the Sega Tetris music, general mechanics, and unused strings ("CREDITS", "COINS", "FREE", "WESTON ANALOG") remain intact from the arcade bootleg.

World Cup USA 94
Post Posted: Sat Sep 19, 2020 3:33 pm
Hi, I have just added this game to my collection and I realised that my copy(the spanish version of the game) is not included here:

https://www.smspower.org/Games/WorldCupUSA94-SMS

In the Release section there is no mention about the spanish one.

I uploaded some photos:

https://i.imgur.com/vdg8pUF.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/adm7v8K.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/SpHQzFs.jpg

As you can see, the spanish release has this number:

29028-06

It also includes a poster and the manual is completly in spanish languaje.

I don't have a scanner, but my brother has it, maybe it would be interesting to scan the cover and upload it here. I will try to scan it in the next days.

Hello, I was browsing through the games section and I believe that Fire & Ice should be tagged as a Amiga port.

Thank you.
