Video game franchises on both Sega Master System and Sega Genesis / Game Gear
Post Posted: Wed Sep 12, 2018 9:55 pm
Hi,

I've recently started collected Sega Master System games and plan to expand my collection to Genesis and Game Gear. For now, I'm not aiming for a full set on either of the latter two, but rather get only those games that have 'kins' on the SMS. There are some obvious ones such as:

- Alex Kidd
- Ecco
- Phantasy Star
- Sonic
- Wonderboy

There are obviously dozens (if not more) others. Is there a good ressource for video game franchises across different Sega consoles?

If not, feel free to name some. Prequels, sequels, ports ... everything is appreciated.

Hi dude, here are some more that are coming to my mind right now.

- Fantasy Zone
- Micro Machines
- Shinobi
- Out Run
- Streets of Rage
- Mickey Mouse (the Illusion series)

If you have Land of Illusion and Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion with Mickey & Donald is quite a nice addition to your collection.

One might argue that Columns fits that criteria, too.

Spellcaster on the SMS and Mystic Defender on the Gen/MD are both part of the same series, based on the manga called Kujakuou.

Black Belt on the SMS and Last Battle on the Gen/MD are both based on the Fist of the North Star/Hokuto No Ken manga.

To be clear to Marsil and anyone unfamiliar with this, the SMS version of Hokuto No Ken (Fist Of The North Star) was repurposed into a new game for the western market called Black Belt. All Hokuto No Ken references were removed, the story and characters were changed, and several significant alterations were made to the graphics AND gameplay (something that many sources online seem to miss). While it was developed from Hokuto No Ken assets so is certainly related, Black Belt is not part of the Hokuto No Ken franchise, nor is there any link in the story and characters between Black Belt and Last Battle.

The differences between the MD version of Hokuto No Ken and Last Battle however are much less significant.
