the SMS internal game
Post Posted: Sun Nov 21, 1999 2:22 am
does the master system see any difference between
a cartridge, a card, and the internal game?
if so, is it possible to change what the internal
game is? has anyone ever tried? and succeded?

thanks

I'm pretty sure the SMS can tell if the game is a cartridge or
a card; and if neither are used, you get the usual error messages
and that hidden built-in game.

I don't think you could change the game without having to
replace the rest of the starup code. Even then, you'd only
have 8K or something, and the smallest SMS games are 32k.

You can replace the built-in game for the new model SMS units.
It's stored on the standard kind of ROMs you'd find in most any
SMS cart; so theoretically you could remove it, stick in a
socket, then plug in any other game.

Needless to say games that use special hardware wouldn't be
candidates for this; for example Phantasy Star has RAM and
a battery, Action Figher is on two ROMs instead of just one.

I believe in some countries the new model SMS was released
with different games, it wasn't always Alex Kidd. I could be
wrong about that though.

In Brazil the SMS was first released with three games, Hang-On, Safari Hunt and a hidden one (like a labirinth game).
The second time it had Alex Kidd in Miracle World, and I may be wrong, but I think the third time it had Sonic in memory.....

Yeah, here in Australia, we got an even later model of the SMS II with Sonic 1 built in. It's pretty damned rare though, these units were being sold about six months to a year before the Sega 32x came out.
