This list includes every unpublished VGM from the old site. Only unreleased material is kept. Each pack can be "Published" or "Not published":

Published: These packs have unpublished VGMs or were logged by people other than the published pack. In these cases a logger name or version note is included in the pack name. Published packs should be updated where needed.

Not published: These packs need to be repacked to the new standard before publishing (cover, update txt, filenames,...).

Below is an archive with the every pack of this list (and already repacked packs).

This thread is out-of-date, but the comments on some of the packs are
worth referring to later when reviewing packs
<http>.

Here is a list of VGM packs that are curently "pending". That means
they've been recieved, but not released yet. Some have yet to be
checked, some have problems.

I will try to update this sticky whenever I can, and I will post about
the problems in packs. You can't reply here to avoid it becoming a
dicussion instead of a reference.

Edit karagh: I updated the list with some sample-accurate's and removed
released packs.

Key:

Update = Update to an existing pack.
Update? = Probably an update to an existing pack.
Sample-accurate = ripped with unnecesary detail; needs to be re-ripped
(unless someone writes a good convertor)
Duplicate = more than one pack by different people; need to compare
No FM releases allowed currently = exactly that - I won't release FM
packs because of unavoidable trimming errors.
problems = there is at least one (more) thing wrong with this pack
???? = Released packs that should be re-checked to make sure they don't
have these problems

I will add some more posts shortly regarding pack problems. The idea is
to keep this list up-to-date whenever possible.

What you can do
Please read and follow the How to make VGM music files and packs
<http>
guidelines. Ask questions when you don't understand them. If you can
help to fix the problems mentioned, please let us know. Special effort
is needed to find good track titles and ordering when music is ripped
from hacks or sound tests. There is lots of composer information on this
forum which can be applied, and finding Japanese track titles is
possible, even for non-Japanese speakers, with a little effort.

Remember, this is a community and we can all help, even if I am an evil
dictator over the VGM section.

Title Screen 1

Why is there a 3.8 second silence at the end of this file? If it is because
there is a gap in the game between this tune and the next one, I'd prefer to
remove the pause because it sounds weird.

About the Emukon automatic looping: it doesn't seem to be perfect.

1. Some of the VGM headers are incorrect - eg. Stages 3, 4 and 5 fails the
lengths check.

2. The looping is sometimes weird. This is possibly because of the game; for
example, by examing the WAV, Stage Start should loop at sample 8085 and end
at sample 688695; because of the ordering of data produced by the game,
Emukon loops it at sample 23520 which makes the end have about 250ms of
music from the start. It doesn't sound so bad but it's not right. High Score
seems to loop in the wrong place too.

If you feel like fixing it up, I suggest turning off fade-out at the end of
tracks, setting the loop repeat to 0 and recording all looped tracks to WAV;
if you find any track that seems to end in a weird place (ie. it has a
little bit of the start at the end) then examine it more closely and
consider re-looping it. It should be fine to edit the existing looped files
so long as no data is missing.

Added Johnnyz's Ys update (fixed tags following great debates, 2 new tracks) and Grass-eatin'me's Sonic 1 package (the original SMS one was not very good, this one is better in almost every way; ripped from Game Gear but identical music). Removed them from the list.

Released The Black Onyx, Satellite 7; help needed
Post Posted: Sat Mar 12, 2005 6:31 pm
In here:

http://www.smspower.org/maxim/forumstuff/Montezuma's_Revenge/

Some, if not all, of these are based on existing music, but I can't put names to them all.

"Obtain Item" is "La Cucaracha". "Opening" is some other awful Mexican mariachi music that I don't know the name of; I suspect the others are too.

All suggestions are welcome.

Voice samples should not have the composer's name; the voice of Krusty is Dan Castellaneta.

National anthems
Post Posted: Wed Oct 19, 2005 5:24 pm
The World Games, Summer Games, Great Volleyball and World Soccer (and other games that are not yet ripped) include national anthems and they all have proper names. Here's a list of a lot of them. Use German Democratic Republic for East Germany and Germany for West Germany; most have links to MIDI or MP3 versions for checking against the VGM.

Wonder Boy III psg
Post Posted: Tue Oct 03, 2006 1:39 pm
Wonder Boy III psg - side-crawler's dance is looped incorrectly! It seems to be looped from the beginning of the song, where the drums is quite different. It needs to play some half second or so more, before looping - and looping not from the start point, but from that half a second further into the song. The same song but in FM seems to be looped the right way (listen to the drums in each version). I could fix it if someone sent me an un-trimmed version of the song.

It's not very hard to record it using the now famous MEKA emulator found on this site. You must have great ears. Even Maxim didn't pick that one up and that's saying alot.

It doesn't sound false or jumpy or anything, it's just the wrong rhytm.

The start melody goes:

A B (C#)

and the drums under A and B goes:

cha cha cha cha (snares)

When it loops it's the same melody, but the drums should go:

boom sss cha cha (kick, hihat, snare, snare)

That means you have the record half a second or so of the "start" of the melody at the "next" verse, before looping (and the loop should start at the C# then)

I often miss this kind of thing, I'm not very musically-minded - I can hear if it sounds bad, but not hear that it's slightly different to the "correct" tune.

I've found a mistake in my own California Games pack, Foot Bag music is just incomplete, as I heard the FM version and could find that one out. I'll just re-rip the music (doesn't need any hack or avoid any sounds, since I don't need to kick the ball) =P

Since the renewal of packs, I've seen many of them lacking m3u lists and txt files, and even some bad trims, like Out Run and Tom & Jerry (actually, where is the Tom & Jerry pack? where did I get it???) *confuse* +_+ (oh, it's Hroþgar's, but couldn't find it in the archive)

Is My Hero really 50hz? I kind of got used to the musics on 60hz when trying to play, ... 50hz they seem so slow! O_o

Shadow Dancer: is K.T. = K. Tukaara? (from Galaxy Force credits)

Why is Deep Duck Trouble pack in the middle of letter P?? XD (Phantasy Star Gaiden, I mean,... well... LOL)

I've send some updated and new packs, but could only find the new ones in the archive list...

And finally, my biggest problem: why all recent VGM I did have much bigger file sizes and can be 75 to 80% zipped?? I'm not doing anything different, and they're frame-accurate!

EDIT: Castle of Illusion pack has serious issues, may I fix them? =) (since I have the needed raw files ripped from some time ago...)

Oh! And... I think someone should work on these games with one unused 1-8 seconds jingle... maybe it's a USED 1-8 seconds jingle...

One more thing: should I upload a pack with music names BGM 81, BGM 82, BGM 8F, etc? (it's Sylvan Tale) (but! Nilo, AKA Niloctronic, is working on the names)

I'd already reviewed and rejected Hroþgar's Tom & Jerry pack, although I can't check why yet.

You need to uncheck "VGM Sample Accurate". Only check it for voices, or if the result is screwed-up music.

Some packs may be ripped at the wrong speed. You have to be very careful to choose the appropriate settings when ripping it.

Deep Duck Gaiden: yeah, guess who has copy/pasted all that data and made a few mistakes...

I have it unchecked all the time O_o (except when I record a voice) ... now that I've come to analyse the situation better, seems like they're getting much bigger in size when I strip unused channels... there's got to be something wrong with that button... they get normal again when I optimize the file, but get the GG stereo and other unused channels back...

Started working on FM packs, since I had so many of them prepared to packing but thought I couldn't do it because of something that was written in the archive. Anyway, I've been looking at the archive again now and saw that many of the new versions of the packs I've sent recently has "Unknown" for composer when it's.. "Known".. :P

And... I think that separate Astérix pack with 1 extra track is ugly, I kind of need to unite all the archives in one pack... (that has 28 tracks) (and the composer is Takayuki Nakamura)

Hm... there is something reeeeeeally wrong with the Clotho music on the Game Gear version of Columns... O__o when the screen is filled with blocks, music changes to the critical part, but when the screen is cleaned again, when the music come back to normal, it just gets really annoying... probably a big mistake from the sound programmer... I want to cut half of a channel from the file, but can't, strip button can only cut entire channels...

Some of the functions in VGMTool deliberately produce a file that's uncompressed; "strip" is one of them. Simply go to the last tab and choose "compress".

The untidiness of the "unapproved" section is precisely because it hasn't been tidied/approved/etc yet.

As this has became a problem with unreleased pack few time ago, I'm saying it =P

Safari Hunt pack has the Title Screen music non-trimmed. Actually, the music plays twice and then the game start music plays and you can hear some shots right after this =P and I really believe they're not 50hz O_o[

........... and who is Tokuhuki Owabo??? XD

Sometime ago I released a fix for this pack but I don't know if any of you guys know about it.

It was fixed at the time we found the music trigger addresses.

Please see this thread for more information.

Thanks...

Also it has now been around 2 years maybe more since I first submitted the VGM pack for The Castle, is there any news on this??

Enduro Racer,

This pack needs a whole re-rip because the motorbike sound is in the background of all the songs, I found a music trigger at D000 but cant seem how to trigger the music yet, ive already hacked the game so it stays on the title screen just to make ripping easier. I dont know if its possible to hack that game to remove the motorbike sound??

How can I help?

Okay, I really have read the thread, but is there any way for someone unexperienced to help with these rips making use of the existing tunes? Or maybe even just inspire the folks already working that their work is appreciated?

Take a pack that you like. Analyse it to decide if there are any missing tracks (see the trigger hacks thread), does it loop properly, are the tags as complete as can be? Try to get real names instead of nicknames for the composer/arranger, get the proper Japanese title, find the manual to get better track names from level names/enemy names. Do more as you see fit. Justify why anything is missing. Then email me the results and I'll look it over and, if I agree, I'll post it as approved.

Feel free to start a thread per pack, it may help get some collaboration going on.

Hey Loser,

I am in the process of doing this too, perhaps if you find a way to contact me we can work together. The thing that lacks in all the packs is screenshots of the game, thats the harder part cause you have to obtain them and if you dont own the original games its technically illegal.

Also there are a few packs that I have re done these include Enduro Racer where I patched the RAM to get rid of the motorbike sound :P

What? The screenshots are the easy part. Taking a screengrab is probably less copyright-infringing than ripping the VGMs anyway. The hard part about the "cover image" is getting it to look good - I'm thinking of requiring square images to play better with normal cover art displayers, which requires some creative effort in an image editor. For example, in the Streets of Rage image below I had to piece together the tiles at the bottom-left because they were overwritten by text.

Tried everything I could to avoid the SFX, but ... since they're on jingles, the other 14 musics are just right anyway... pack only missing the PNG file and maybe there is something wrong with optimising... I don't know what it could be +_+

In reference to the Sonic 2 VGM pack and the music trigger hack http://www.smspower.org/dev/docs/wiki/Sound/MemoryHacks
I'm trying to get a more accurate list of the tracks. Here it is so far:

value: SMS track / GG track (where different)
81: Aqua Lake Zone
82: Underground Zone
83: Gimmick Mt. Zone
84: Crystal Egg Zone
85: Green Hill Zone
86: Sky High Zone
87: Scrambled Egg Zone / SCZ & Intro
88: Intro / Title Screen
89: Boss / NONE (memory hack crashes game)
8A: Power Sneakers / NONE (as above)
8B: Invincibility
8C: Act End
8D: Death
8E: Continue Screen
8F: Chaos Emerald
90: Game Over
91: Ending
92: Unused Music? / The End (as listed in the existing GG ripped pack)
93: Act Begin
94: Unused tweets? / Boss

values after this are just sound effects.

see here for notes on differences. My thoughts - speed shoes (officially Power Sneakers from manual?) omitted from GG Aqua Lake 2, the only appearance in the game? Music therefore removed from GG ver.

I haven't finished the GG version, but the 92 music is different in each version. Is this the ending heard on the GG? SMS 92 Is a looping song, GG 92 is just a short flourish.

Existing pack has separate files for Intro and Scrambled Egg, Intro is just cut short. It is of course the same music.

After four years, I finally figured out what it is - El Jarabe Tapatío (aka the Mexican Hat Dance)!

From the old packs page - the "SpellCaster_update.zip" pack includes an unused track which is in fact used on the password input screen.

I found a consistency problem while checking the old packs:
Some packs have a "clock rate" of 3579545 while others have 3579540. Shouldn't it be always the same?

It doesn't really matter - it will cause a 0.0001% error in the tone. It depends on the emulator that logged the original VGM.

If there was a bulk editor it's be easy to edit them all at once. I prefer 3579545 myself.

That's what I want a command line VGM editor for. It would simplify a lot creating a batch tool, tagging, checking errors, ...

Sorry for the late response, I was on vacation.
I thought of doing it myself, but you can do a much better job than me (I can program, but I'm not a programmer). If you are still interested, I can write here the complete planning I thought, and help you in anything you want.
It should be a really simple program, reading and writing tags and header values depending on command line options. It may include other (I think less important) options: consistency checks (offsets); VGM/GD3 specifications (chip clocks, system names); and a text output. Written in C with standard libraries for maximum portability.

The hard part is Unicode.

Yeah, I was looking Unicode before vacation. And the text output was the reason to ask you for the sourcecode of VGMtool.

I'm sorry, but I didn't notice the last response until some days ago.
I attached the vgm tagging tool I wrote yesterday.
Currently all saved files will be uncompressed.

Unicode is supported via HTML NCRs. To write a newline character you can type \n.

I'll write a tool to modify the vgm header soon.

EDIT: Bugfix for ShowTag command.
EDIT2: Files are recompressed, if they are gzipped.
EDIT3: Attachment removed.

Sweet, but ... it doesn't work with Wine, could you compile it for linux or post the source?
And you should post this tool in your "VGM tools" post too.

It'd also be good to add it to http://www.smspower.org/Music/Software . Just create a new page (or many) tagged with [[!VGM Utility]].

I'll upload the source when I completed the Unicode support. The Linux-Part is unfinished.
Also I finally found a working lib-file for zlib 1.2.5.
Compressed files will now be compressed after saving. Uncompressed ones won't.

I'll create a page after finishing the vgm tagger.

It's very easy to compile it yourself...

You're right. I already compiled zlib under Linux as a part of VGMPlay.

I attached the finished tool and the source code. I added an option to output UTF-8 encoded Unicode characters.
I'll create the page tomorrow.

EDIT: Page added.
EDIT2: Attachments removed. They're on the wiki now.

repacked packs

Maxim,
I've seen you have been uploading some of the pending packages.
Could you remove the packages you've released from the list? Also, if you work in any other packages, please mark them with a WIP to avoid duplicate work.
