dragon crystal
Post Posted: Sat Jul 03, 1999 9:22 pm
Now what about this game?

I just finished it after three hours of running through
randomized mazes searching for this teleporter things.

I have to say that this game is still a mystery to me,
it has no story and no recognisable sense:

What about a dude walking around with a dragon on his a**?
What about the time travel?
How can I get rid of the cursed ring without dying?
What is the gold for?
Why is this called a rpg - where´s the rp - part??

And most important:
What about an ending that is even suckier than the shinobi one:
I mean I take the crystal after slaying everyone with a cool
laser blade and all I get is the screen fading into bright white
and the game freezing?
Is this an emulation failure (massage08)?
Or didn´t sega believe anyone would freeze the int of life
and take the time to beat this?
I suspect they where to lazy to make a good ending
sorry but I´m in a light version of rage, so if anyone has
the booklet to the game or is even a fan of this game
(knows the story) he could correct my view of this thing as
I think it was left after beeing developed half.

...and guess this should have been but isn´t a worth successor
for GAW.

Anyone want to help work on a FAQ for this game?
I've started one just for fun...since there is almost nothing on this game out there...I figured maybe it would be fun to throw something together..
If anyone has started one already, or wants to help, let me know

Sequel on Genesis
Post Posted: Sun Jul 04, 1999 2:56 am
There is a game that is almost EXACTLY the same on the Genesis called Fatal Labyrinth. You basically walk around forever and the fighting system is the same. And believe it or not the scenery is even more boring. You literally walk through a labyrinth the entire time.

And there was no story on this game either. It starts off as an RPG. You walk around the town (albeit a one screen town...) and talk to like three people who ask you to slay the dragon or whatever. You walk into a cave or something and walk around endlessly.

The game is basically impossible because after a while you'll get to the point where there is no way out of a room and you have to reset. I think the levels are randomley generated and there's nothing to guarantee an exit.

The game was very very bad.

P.S. Why does an egg follow our "hero" around in Dragon Crystal?

Sorry about the last post, accidentally hit enter. Fatal Labyrinth does have randomly generated levels (like DC), even within the current game. If you get stuck, go down a floor & back up again :) When you reach the top of the castle/labyrinth there is a final battle with a large Dragon on the roof.

As for the egg in DC, as you gain experience levels the egg hatches and grows into an increasingly large Dragon (hence the title?).

ok, I hit enter too, so ignore that last post.

Here is what I have so far for a FAQ. Anyone who wants to add more, just e-mail me or post it here. I know it sucks for a FAQ...but oh well. I'm already getting bored with it, like everything else I do, So I'll probably quit soon :)

---------------------------
About the Game:
---------------------------

According to Game Sages "This game is apparently the 'unofficial' sequel
to Fatal Labyrinth. It has a couple major differences though; All or most of the game
seems to be played outdoors, rather than in a dungeon, and a Dragon is always following
you that gains power as you progress. Unfortunately though, it had no password/save feature."
Fatal Labyrinth is a Genesis/Megadrive game.
There is also a version of Dragon Crystal on Game Gear.

Game Sages also says the following, which appears to be true about Dragon
Crystal Also.
"I can't say too much about Fatal Labyrinth since I never really had a chance to fully tackle
this game, but it seems very unique. The game is set in 3rd-Person perspective, but unlike
most 3rd-Person RPG's, you can't see your surroundings until you've explored them; it's kind
of like an auto-mapping system, but is part of the actual game and not just a map of an area.
You play a single character (Trykaar) in search of the 'Holy Goblet'."

They also say "Treasures (such as Weapons, armor, and food) are scattered throughout the
Labyrinth, and enemies can be seen before an actual encounter takes place. According to
Rassilon, This game (as well as Dragon Crystal) were "based" on Hack and Rogue for Unix.
Hmm... "Hack: the Rogue"? Perhaps NWC is even more clever than I thought... "

The Levels in Dragon Crystal are randomly generated.
There is a strange little egg that follows the hero around the levels.
As you gain experience levels the egg hatches and grows into an increasingly large
Dragon (hence the title?).

Hmmm... my message didn't show up for some reason...

The levels in FL are randomly generated even within the current game. If you get stuck, go down a floor & climb back up :) There is a final battle with a giant Dragon on the roof.

As for the egg in DC, as you gain experience levels it grows into an incresingly large dragon (hence the title?)

now after fiddling with the options of massage I once got the ending:
it says something like you return to your real world and the guy is jumping into the crystal
and the staff is listed, I got it only once and the screen was messed up...

for your faq

I have some things to add to your FAQ:

so here goes my knowledge, damn if I knew that before
I´d written down everything, so now I can only post what
I remember for sure if you need more mail me:

Level

FL?? Hero
FL30 Warlord/Dragonlord
... many more

Weapon

Dagger
ShortSword
LongSword
BloodBlade - is cursed!
Dragonslayer - good for green dragons
Laserblade - I could find it only on the last level(secret room)
... many more

Rods
"Wither Rod" - steels a level of you

Scrolls
Shiftscroll - beams you to your starting point of the level

Hints
there are often secret paths in dead end ways that lead to
closed areas (at a point of the game you can only get to exit
with these) - just stand to the wall you suspect the path and
press the button you normally take things several times

hit the pause button (sms) to slowdown the game
there´s also a potion that does the same (maybe another that fixes)
it

the holy goblet seems to be the crystal on the start screen,
you find it on the last level

there is a scroll/potion/rod I once used and got beamed
to another place/time and it said something like "a time travel
happend"

RE: Very useful info for FAQ

This game is basically a copy of Rogue, a very popular game that has appeared on most platforms known to man. (Second only to Zork, which is avail. on the gameboy :-) I haven't looked, but there's prolly a Rogue faq at gamefaqs.com, you could link to it from your FAQ. :-)

You may not know Rogue, but you might know some of it's descendants such as Nethack, Moria, Kroz or Diablo. (Trust me on that one, Diablo is Rogue-like3D)

If anyone's interested, I have the MS-DOS version of Rogue here (77k uncompressed, I'd zip and email it if anyone wants :-)

Oh, and the potion that changed a purple ring into a food ring is most likely "Identify" and to remove a cursed ring you need a "bless scroll"

The best way to identify an object is to have two, and use one (Except rings, which you can just wear, they don't use up)
and the other object's name will change to the correct name.

Regarding the Pro Action Replay code for Dragon Crystal, it is the one that I created for the game and submitted to Richard Good for his web page, however, please print the whole description (below) to avoid any confusion:

---------------
Dragon Crystal
---------------

00C62160 - Infinite Hit Points (counter will act strange, but you will never die)

Thanks!
