Fantasy Zone with FM Music
Post Posted: Tue Nov 28, 2017 2:27 am
This is old news from 2015 or 2016, but I've found very little information:

Sega 3D Classics Collection for 3DS apparently contains a secret updated version of Fantasy Zone that contains FM Music. I've only seen a couple (very vague, few-second) clips of this on Youtube. Has anyone played this new revision? Any thoughts? From what I heard, it sounds like incredible attention to detail occurred in getting the music to sound similar to the System 16 version of the game.

It's just a port of the game with the FM built in. It sounds great, on a JP Master System, Power Base FM, Viletim FM board, or 3DS :)

Oh that's very interesting, hadn't heard about it before!
The M2 guys are crazy enough to do that sort of stunt and have chibitech create YM2413 tracks.

Couldn't find a video with FM in SMS Fantasy Zone 1.. which is your Youtube link?

Thanks for that link, Bock! I will try to post the link to the Youtube video in which you can hear the first few seconds of "Opa-Opa" in Plaleaf later tonight.

segasonicfan, are you implying that what Maxim suggested has already been done? :)

This is the only video in which I could clearly hear any music (it sounds REALLY GOOD!)

What segasonicfan is saying is that fantasy zone has always had FM music if you have a compatible system.

I used to play it on my SMS2 with viletims FM mod and it sounds fantastic, definitely one of the best FM tracks for SMS.

Are you thinking of Fantasy Zone II (or perhaps The Maze)? According to this, the SMS port of the original Fantasy Zone does not support the FM chip.

I'll admit I'm not sure, maybe I am confusing it.

I just tried it and I can confirm that there is no FM in Fantasy Zone 1.

Correct, I used to own both the USA and Japan versions (same ROM, I think (?)) and it is a PSG-only game.

Interestingly, both cartridges would crash without fail after about 5 minutes of gameplay on my Japanese Master System every single time.

Yes, commercialized version is only PSG and not FM

But hidden game version in "Sega 3D Classics Collection" for 3DS sounds like FM

Then it is needed to extract ROM and burn it into everdrive or similar to test it in Master System with FM hardware, or compare ROM's with new one

The M2 guys composed / arranged SMS FM tracks and made a custom driver just for the 3DS release of the Fantasy Zone easter egg.

I still need to buy this cartridge sometime. :)

The best thing about that collection is playing Maze Hunter in real 3D. It's just incredible, it's the experience the old 3D glasses never quite managed to achieve.

Wish all the 3D SMS games were on 3DS, or at least Space Harrier 3D.

I believe Space Harrier 3D is on Vol. 1 of the Japanese releases (Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives (セガ3D復刻アーカイブス Sega 3D Fukkoku Ākaibusu). I was hoping Sega was going to keep localizing the series for the West but at this point it looks like importing is the only option.

I think there were 3 compilations, with the west only getting the second volume.

That's great news, I didn't even know there were more in this series. Thanks for the info!

That's right, although most of the games on the two volumes that did not have a physical Western release did have individual digital releases. There are some notable ones that weren't released digitally in the West (e.g. Alien Syndrome), and there are a few hidden/unlockable games that can only be accessed if you have all three Japanese releases.

There's a good table here showing the releases for each region: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_Classics#SEGA_3D_Classics

I had no idea about this. I'd love to hear that. Can you link the youtube videos?
