Also, why was the seemingly finished English version of the WBIML arcade left unreleased? Who made that decision?

I will be spending time doing a sort of back-and-forth interview with Ryuichi Nishizawa in about ten days. If you have any questions either to be asked to him/them or to us, regarding the old game, the new game, the series or anything peripheral to Westone, feel free to ask here!

There was some artwork on the old westone site that showed a possible new wonderboy game, i can't really find the picture i had it mind but was there a wonderboy game in progress after the last megadrive game ?

and don't forget to say, wonderboy 1 is running on saturn !!

Was so exciting to see gameplay footage from the game, and I have to say I'm really, really impressed! This was just as good as I had hoped it would be! Looking even more forward to the game now!

To save me watching hours of footage on twitch, can someone tell me are the Q&A stuff (about the old games) with Ryuichi Nishizawa included in this video?

I'm guessing not but just checking as I'm keen to find the answer to my question about the Wonderboy name and how they came up with it

This looks beautiful! I did notice some screen tearing, but hopefully that will be fixed before release. Otherwise, bravo! The affection and respect you have for Wonder Boy is apparent.

I don't know where that tearing is coming from but I had to run the game on a computer that not's mine and I don't know about their capture setup. Moreover I couldn't get it working fullscreen there so it is weirdly bordered and not full resolution. There's no tearing that I know of on regular computers.

I'm biased since I think that the original is one of the best games ever.
But with this remake, the levels, the paralax scrolling, the animation, the backgrounds just look delicious. And that wind mill in the old town. omg.
Would a Dreamcast port be possible? It would be great to have it running on the most powerful Sega console.

Famitsu interview
Post Posted: Wed Jul 20, 2016 10:23 am
We briefly talked to Famitsu. My colleague Ben started telling them about my collection and they published the pictures (I believe it'll be in the paper edition?). The interviewer said he was into SG/SC stuff.
Somehow they mixed up each other's answers a few times (no big deal).

http://www.famitsu.com/news/201607/20111262.html

We build a custom box and cartridge of an hypothetical Mark III release, which Ichigobankai designed with great care and talent. We gave one to Ryuichi Nishizawa, and a spare box was at the Bitsummit event so Famitsu took a picture of that.

Just seen another video of it in action and I can't stress enough how much I love the looks in this game.... However!

If I had to pick something to change in what I've seen so far, it would be the squiggle speed of the drawn outlines while inside the shops.

Right now, they're more "Dr. Katz stressful" than "Yoshi's island" doodle-y, which seems a little odd in such a calm scene.

That video ICEknight refer you what extracted from the twitch stream:

I'm not pushing that video too much because I think the build is a little early (we really didn't footage for bitsummit to be public, but when asked to do a twitch on official twitch channel we couldn't really refuse the opportunity).

Back to the squiggling, yeah, that's possible. At least one person said the same thing as you did, but when we first tried it felt better at this
speed. We'll revisit that when we put more work to the interfaces.

Thanks for the feedback :) and everyone thanks for sharing info about the game around, it is really helpful.

Ichigo rocks the town again! =D

So much to see on the photos - I´m one of the guys who love collector´s cards (in postcard size) =P And these cards look damn good, I would love it to get my hands on these.

I wish you guys the best of success; this is what today´s mainstream should be. Thanks for sharing Bock!

Two new screenshots & blog opening

Thanks for the kind comments, tibone, gordman!

Started a simple blog now:
http://www.thedragonstrap.com/blog/

And we released 2 new high-def screenshots.

About the cards (they are business cards), I'm sure I can hold on a pile to share at some point if you want them :)

Good idea to use a blog to share informations.
The screenshots are outstanding. The hanami tree, the pirate ship, the cloud with the sunglasses 8) and the Lizardman are so great. The Lizardman looks so angry now. In the original game, he is something like a coward =D

I would be very thankful to get some of the business cards =) They could be a nice addition to physical releases as well.

Bock any update on that Q&A with Ryuichi Nishizawa you mentioned a few months ago?

I'd still love to hear the story behind the name "Wonder Boy", how they came up with it, what were the inspirations, etc if you had chance to ask

We ran out of time as shooting preparation took much longer than expected, so didn't get to ask all questions (I missing asking this specific question, sorry..) though I may e-mail Mr Nishizawa with some followups.

We've been working through the footage but it isn't as good as we hoped - sound is meh, lack of preparation, and we were super jet-lagged. That said, we are still working out to release some of that contents, perhaps in different segments.

Ah that's a shame, yeh if you could email him to ask that would be great. I wonder if perhaps other names were considered for the character or game before they settled on Wonder Boy? Or perhaps just other names used in development like how Sonic was "Mr. Needlemouse" and Streets of Rage was "D-Swat" etc

Sonic was never called Mr. Needlemouse.

The early sketch said "Mr. Harinezumi", which translates as "Mr. Hedgehog", not "Mr. Needlemouse". Somebody at an old TV program didn't know his Japanese and the rest is made up history.

Ah right, that makes more sense, cheers. I find this kind of stuff fascinating, how characters developed and evolved before being seen by the public

The thing is that many of the interesting new questions I asked, the answers were along the line of "I don't remember" "I'm not sure".

What already filtered from existing (better) interviews (e.g. the Untold Story of Japanese Gamedev and HG101 interviews) covers a lot of the publishable stuff.

A tasteful and stylish arrangement of "Side-Crawler's Dance" (often incorrectly called "Mind of Hero"). A tango in latino/french style :)

How do you know that Adventure Zone == Side-Crawler's Dance (in the game)? What is the reasoning for it?

There's 3 tracks for which I haven't yet mapped the OST names with the in-game names:

OST:
Desert Zone
Adventure Zone (mouse zone, jungle, lion rocky underground)
Take It Easy (dungeon)

Game Credits:
?? Side-Crawler's Dance
?? The Monster's Lair
?? The Danger Zone

And I don't know which one maps to which one.
One could be tempted to say that "The Monster's Lair" == Dungeon Music, however:
a) note the mismatching order
b) in the original game code the dungeons are refered as "dan"/"danger"

So I'm stuck there with those 3 names.

It's probably all quite wrong on Youtube, most probably because of us: when we (what it me?) named the WBIII VGM package we had to guess a few of those names.

Can't really find what you refer to. Sakamoto posted a few times under his name or Shintan but I don't remember that info. Will search again..

It seems the order from the game credits is actually:

Side-Crawler's Dance
The Danger Zone
The Monster's Lair

In fact the whole order of the soundtrack matches similarly with the credits which would mean:

Side-Crawler's Dance = Desert Zone ( 砂漠 Desert )
The Danger Zone = Adventure Zone ( 森 Forest )
The Monster's Lair = Take It Easy ( 沈没船 Sunken Ship )

27 Marine (town)
...
28 Shop (store)

30 Mind of Hero (sea)

33 Adventure Zone (forest)
34 Monsterland? (Don John falling)
35 Take It Easy (sinking boat)

Yeah, I only meant there were some similarities between the lists, which doesn't prove anything conclusively.

Side-Crawler's Dance could be a reference to the side-crawlers in the under water section of the Desert. The name sounds like the music for a water level.

Danger Zone and Adventure Zone have a similar meaning.

The Monster's Lair sounds like an appropriate title for a boss dungeon.
