Model / Serial Number Request
Post Posted: Wed May 04, 2016 10:46 pm
I've been requesting Serial & Model numbers over here for a couple of months now.

My main aim was to emulate this by estimating the number of Master Systems manufactured from using the formula for the German Tank Problem. It has, however, resulted in more than just that, such as the discovery of previously undocumented models and region codes .... more on this soon!

The vast majority of my model/serial numbers have been obtained from Ebay ... for export models .... mainly US/UK/DE numbers, but serials/models outside of that are under-represented. For JP models/serials I've used Yahoo.jp. It's a regionally biased sample, so isn't yet representative of all PAL models, but US & JP is homogeneous enough that I think I have a pretty accurate estimation for those two markets.

Now, the more Model/Serial numbers I have, the more accurate the estimations. So, in case some here haven't seen my thread on the other site, and before I publish my estimations based on the models/serials so far I'm requesting people post their model/serial numbers. It doesn't matter what region or model, all will eventually be useful, although for now I'm just going to analyse US & JP models.

Thanks! We don't currently understand Mark III and other pre-SMS or non-Sega serial numbers, but hopefully we can work those out in the future.

Thanks, can you include the model numbers as well please. Yes, 49G should be bios code B (Hang On).

I confirm that Hang-On is the game in the third machine.

These're the model numbers:
3005-06-B for the Alex Kidd and the Hang On ones.
3005-24-A for the one with HangOn and Safari Hunt.

Cheers. For the one starting "49i", are you sure that the "i" is in lowercase? I've only seen uppercase "I" used in that year and for that bios before.

For models beginning in 4 (Made in China);

3010-A   3010-B   3010-C   3005-xx-B/C/D  3005-xx-A  3005-xx-C  3000
1+       5+       A+       G-H            I-J        K          Y
                           a-b            c-d
                           h-i

Letters M-X, e-g were reserved for Mega Drive / Genesis. The bios code for Alex Kidd changes as older bioses are gradually discontinued, starting with Missile Defense 3-D bios, only seen in 1988-1989 so far.

That's a relief, otherwise I'd have to go back to the drawing board :) It's only an issue for H/h and I/i which use both upper and lower case.

Thanks, it's actually a German model (region code 18), but Italian ones (13) also have the TUV sticker too. The rules were stricter in Germany, they required extra shielding, maybe it was the same for Italy.

Extra shielding? This one has its metal shield which covers the whole board, you mean other models aren't so? :|

Actually, I'm not so sure about SMS II. With SMS I my German models are a lot heavier than my UK models, and the service manual lists two shield plates which are only for West German models (which are in mine). I do actually have an Italian SMS II, but not a UK one to compare it with. It would be nice to note the differences between model numbers.

Thanks, this is the earliest one that I've seen. It should have this early board revision. If you ever open it up, please post the date printed on the board, it should be in the format of "61.x.xx". We can get a pretty good idea of when they started manufacturing PAL units.

Thanks! It's actually one day later than my slightly higher serial number. I guess that they didn't assemble them the same day as the boards were manufactured :). Still, I think we can say that it's unlikely that there were any German models manufactured before late August 1986.

So beyond estimating production numbers, we're also discovering previously undocumented models. Such as "3006-27" (PAL-I)(region code "27"=South Africa)

Here's a South African TV advert ... in Afrikaans!

^ Thanks.

I've come across an unexpected model/serial. Factory "8" (Japan) manufactured the first PAL consoles in 1986. Batch 865 for Germany (3005-18), and batch 866 for other PAL countries. I think the only difference was that Germany got Hang On included.

So far I've come across 3010-03 (Australia) and 3010-11 (Hong Kong) from batch 866. I've also seen 3010-07 (South East Asia), but the serial wasn't clear. I presume that there should also be 3010-13 (Italy) as SMS released in Italy in 1986, but I only have a small sample of Italian serials so haven't come across this one yet.

Surprisingly I've also come across 3010-05 (UK) from this batch, despite SMS not getting released in the UK until nearly a year later. This one was in Hong Kong, which already had it's own model released.

Ariolasoft was supposed to release the SMS in the UK in 1986, they even held a press event to show it off, but they never did release it. When Mastertronic won the distribution rights at the 1987 Summer CES it was reported that Sega and Ariolasoft couldn't agree on a pricing policy.

So it looks like Sega actually manufactured UK consoles for a 1986 release, but ended up shipping them to Hong Kong (which was the only other PAL-I country where SMS had been released). I haven't actually come across this one in the UK.

This one now confirmed. That brings to 69 the total number of confirmed SMS model numbers not including TecToy, Samsung, or Mark III. I'm sure that there are more yet to be discovered.

I'm still collating these in case anyone has missed this thread before.

Thanks ^. Missile Defense 3D console is relatively rare in the US, but even rarer in Europe. Until now I've only seen 1988 and 1989 manufactured PAL consoles, which made sense as the 3D glasses were discontinued in the US in 1989, and the last acknowledged 3D game, Outrun 3D released mid-'89 in Europe, and was cancelled in the US and Japan. I've recently come across a 1990 model (second digit of serial number is last digit of year), although it's very low, so it seems that it only just about got manufactured into 1990. That would probably make it a VA3, which I don't think has been documented in a Missile Defense 3D console.

Incidentally, you can tell the bios for PAL consoles from the third character of the serial number. Here's the ones that I'm aware of, along with the known years of manufacture (every year they'd start at the same number/letter and then move onto the next after 100,000 units). With SMS II they changed the format (a small number of Australian SMS 1s use the same format as SMS II).

5 v1.3                  86,87
6 v1.3                  86,87

Thanks guys.

A strange thing with Australian SMS IIs made in China is that they had both PAL-G and PAL-B(VV) versions with the same model number (3006-03). That confused me for some time as I consistently got twice as many serial numbers for 1992 as 1991 despite the highest number being around 100,000 for each, which was statistically improbable (pretty much impossible). Then when I noticed the different types and ordered them by model number + PAL type the discrepancy went away. Grouping together they're ordered randomly, rather than in batches, which offers further confirmation.

So for these consoles, it's possible for two consoles with the same model number to also have the same serial number, so we also need the "PAL-G" or "PAL-B(VV)" designation. Unfortunately that means that I have to discard some serials as I didn't record that detail or have a picture.

I don't think Australia started using UHF (PAL-G) transmissions until the late 70s, so when SMS released in 1986 many TVs could still only receive VHF (PAL-B) transmissions. I guess this wasn't an issue by 1991 when they also started producing PAL-G consoles for Australia, although as they continued to manufacture PAL-B consoles then maybe it depended on the State?

I've seen the same for the Mega Drives I have - they came in either PAL-G or PAL-B(VV).

Let me know if you want the Mega Drive S/N's and data.

Yes, Mega Drive ones are welcome too, although I haven't done anything with them yet.
