Super Columns & Tetris (KR), three E-Swat prototypes
Post Posted: Sat Jun 27, 2015 8:29 pm
Back in the hot summer, we've got some new dumps to release!

Super Columns & Tetris (슈퍼 컬럼스 테트리스) (referred in-game just as Super Columns) for the Master System. A rare Korean release from 1990 with the luxury of not one but two clones in the same cartridges. And they both have a 2 players mode!

We also have not one, not two but three prototypes of E-SWAT for the Master System. Back when it proudly said on the title screen THE ULTIMATE FACTOR IN THE BATTLE AGAINST CRIME followed by a typo on the difficulty selection screen. I got hold of those a long time ago but they stayed unsorted for a while. One of the dump was kindly donated by Arnold. Paul has taken the time to figure out their ordering (read his notes). Any other notable differences?

Developers, take note of the mini-rush-programming competition for July 8!

I have just rewritten and clarified the analysis of version differences at Development/ESWAT-SMS.

More on E-SWAT from an old e-mail by Arnold who spotted differences:
- His proto (which was Proto 0) says 5/26 on the EPROM label.
- Shows 'arrest' word at level start.
- No sound when playing in demo mode.
- No continue timer.
- 'The end' picture is different

The line saying "Shows 'arrest' word at level start" suggest that Arnold was comparing Proto 0 to retail V1. So the other differences have happened at some point between Proto 0 and V1.

Sound during the demo was added between Proto 1 and Proto 2. The continue timer was added between v0 and v1.

The end picture seems to be the same in both Proto 0 and v1?

These prototypes are very cool.

I spotted quite a few differences in Prototype 0:

- No health bar in HUD
- Player sprites are different
- Moves a lot slower
- No sound effect when collecting bullet item
- Subweapons don't show in HUD
- Subweapons are different
- Player automatically walks off screen at end of level
- RD4 boss can glitch
- No wall-mounted turning gun enemy
- Last boss, you don't fight the fat dude after destroying the laser balls
