Sega Master System Brawl (Megadrive homebrew)
Post Posted: Fri Mar 21, 2014 9:57 pm
Hello everyone !

I'm a long time fan of the Master System, and also an occasional reader of this forum.

I decided to write here for the first time, because I'm working on a game you might be interested in. I know it's not strictly Master System related, but I think it's close enough ;)

It's a homebrew for the Megadrive, programmed with the BASIC compiler BasiEgaXorz.

Basically, the game is a fighting game where all the characters are from the Master System !

Here is a video to show you my progress so far :

Youtube end of link : -D2I4AfhOFw (as a Newbie, can't insert the link, so you'll have to work it out yourselves ;) )

How about Sega Mega Drive SUPER 32X CD Brawl for the Master System after this project, just kidding.

I would pick Fox as my first character. Would be great if for a special move, Fox could throw the bird with the SF2 fireball motion.
I'd like to see Musashi (Shinobi) as a character as well.

Then you'll be happy with my new additions (and thanks for the link BTW) :
- Psycho Fox can now transform !
- new arena (Wonderboy in MonsterLand)
- option page and credit page
- life bars

How to transform :
- B+left : Fox
- B+right : Tiger
- B+up : Monkey
- B+down : Hippo

I'm not sure Psycho Fox will be able to transform at will in the final version (I think I'll add power-ups for that).

Hello everyone,

here is a video showing the game played on a real 50hz console (via Everdrive) :

To add some new fighters for my game, I need help from the knowledgeable guys here.
Where can I find the sprite sheets for the following characters ?
- Teddy Boy
- Bin from Dynamite Dux
- the Bonanza Bros

I couldn't find them on the net, and ripping the sprites myself seems a waste of time if someone's already done it.

Thanks in advance !

Wow, looks amazing. I can't wait to try it in an emulator.
Dumb question, but would it also be possible to play this on a real megadrive?

Of course it's possible to play it on a real megadrive, I've already done it via an mega everdrive.
You can see it in that video :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjrza3fNqCc

And I also plan to make a few cartridges (mostly for personal usage and for friends).

Wow, this is pretty cool. Kinda weird that it's a Mega Drive game, but anyway.

It's really hard to play, though, with the A button for attacking...

Thanks for the feedback, but why is that hard to play ? How would it make a big difference if it was another button ?
Just asking...

I can't attack with A while jumping with C. My finger can't reach both buttons at the same time.

That's why 90% of the games have C for jumping, B for attacking and A for an extra function when needed.

Ah ok, I use two fingers so I never thought it would be a problem ;)
Well, perhaps I'll add the possibility to remap the buttons in the options. Thanks for the feedback !

Looks cool, although the fan-art Sonic Adventure styled Bin looks a bit out of place among all the classic artwork.

I'd use the duck from the arcade flyer instead, which was also used as the cover for the home computer conversions.

EDIT: Or this one, which looks better and might have been part of an unpublished Japanese cover:

He looks great ! I'll change that when I'll have the time, thanks.
I couldn't find a decent Bin so I used and recolored a drawing of Bean from Sonic the fighters.

Looks amazing! But I can't play it on my AtGames Mega 3-X :(

When I try to start the game, it exits and jumps directly to the built-in games :(

big update, the character roster is complete :

The game isn't finished yet, I still have the power-ups to add and a few other things.

Yeah, it doesn't work on the AtGames consoles, an emulation problem I guess. I can't do much about that, sorry.

Happy new year everyone !

The game is advanced enough so I could make a "beta version" physical cartridge out of it, that I offered to my brother as a gift for Christmas (thanks to Redfield1 for making the cart).

This is what it looks like :

Same version of the game, running on the GCW Zero console :

I'm still (slowly) working on the game !

At last all the animations done by Axel Grimard are in the game.
Here is a video with all of them (spoiler alert : you'll see the hidden characters) :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ex_1LKUzc3c

Also, scoring has been added to the story mode, and you can see your hi-scores from the main menu.

I've got some stuff to show you.

A little family picture with all the games from which the SMS Brawl fighters come :

A walkthrough with Sonic which can be found on youtube :

And the last version of the game with two new arenas (from Bonanza Brothers and Quartet) :

This is awesome, I was thinking about doing some Repro games, If I ever get the time to do it, would you mind if this was one of the first games? If I ever would get to the point of profit :) I would want to share it with the developer. Are you still working one it?

Hello, sorry for the late reply.

I'm not currently working on the game but I plan to make at least one update 'til this summer.
If you want to make some repros, go ahead, no problem !

It makes no real sense to make a cartmodd / repro of an unfinished homebrew game that will be finished in the future. It´s a waste of material.

Well, it can make sense when the unfinished game is 100% playable and when you don't know if or when it'll be finished ;)

And BTW some people didn't wait for the finished game to make repros :

Damn, that sucks. For me, it makes no sense at all. When I´ll get this game, I will get it from you - 100% completed ^,^ I can be patient.

These people didn´t even asked you for permission, but you probably have no problem with that because it´s commercial for your game =D

Yeah I don't mind, As long as it allows more people to know or play the game I'm fine with it.

When the time has come and you will produce/release your own ´official´ version, then the game will be finished for sure ;)

And if you want to do more, there is a chance for Sega Mega Drive Brawl *hehe* :D

Hello everyone !

I'm currently working on the final touches for SMS Brawl, in order to make a proper 1.0 version before going on with another project.

This doesn't mean this will be the final version of the game, but I won't touch it for a while then (you could say that doesn't change much from the last months).

One the things I'd like to add would be the original sound effects from the games, but to be honest I don't have a clue how to extract them properly.
Even on Meka and selecting the right sound channels I still have some background music I can't get rid off.
I know there are some quite knowledgeable guys here. So does any of you have an idea ? Thanks in advance ;)

And btw, if you want to have a look at my next project, look at this video :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72wHkpyI9tU
(It runs on Megadrive/Genesis like SMS Brawl)
