SEGA Music Competition: Win A SMS MIDI Interface!
Post Posted: Wed Mar 17, 2010 1:11 pm
It's time to get your chipmusic on! This is your chance to win a SEGA Master System MIDI Interface. Be the coolest musician in your town with this brand new tool that lets you control the sound chip in your SEGA Master System with MIDI data.

The Prize
The prize includes the following:
• brand-new, hand made little-scale-brand SEGA Master System MIDI Interface (SMSM)
• instruction manual
• required cable

Since this product will not be available on the market by the time the competition ends, the winner will be the only member of the public to own this cool piece of retro boutique music hardware!

Competition Details
Submit a SEGA-related music track. This may be:
• chipmusic written for the SEGA Master System / SEGA Mega Drive
• music written within the constraints of the SEGA Master System / SEGA Mega Drive
• music that is covering / remixing a specific SEGA Master System / SEGA Mega Drive tune
• any of the above may include additional instrumentation (whether electronic or more traditional) - however, the focus should be on the SEGA aspects of the work

Music that does not fit into the above categories will be disqualified. If your entry is a cover or a remix of a SEGA Master System / SEGA Mega Drive tune, please be sure to include what it is that you are covering.

Please note that there will only be one winner. The judge(s) decision is final.

Submission Guidelines
• the deadline for this competition is the 17th April, 2010
• limit of one entry per person / group
• the length of your SEGA track should be between 1:30 and 5:00
• submission format is strictly as 192 kbps stereo MP3
• send your submissions to: sega@little-scale.com with the subject line 'SEGA Music Competition'
• the best 10 tracks will be released as a digital archive

Note that this competition is in no way affiliated with SEGA.

If I submit a cover which includes lead vocals and self-written lyrics (with several Sega references), would this count as enough focus on the "Sega aspects of the work"?

I guess you'd have to hear the song to make a judgement, but I thought I'd ask anyway...

Seems like a cool competition! I'll probably participate one way or another.

It's a shame about the 1 entry rule, was thinking of trying a couple if different approaches.

Use your best judgment. If you think that your piece fits into the guidelines for submission, please feel free to enter it. Vocals are allowed. :)

Just a quick note, if anyones wanting some sax stuff in their tracks, let me know!

I may go about this the hard way and use one of Seb's sample packs and write it on my DS. I will have some hours to kill on planes in the next few days :)

Damn, that's too bad, because it would be very difficult to shorten the song I'm working on. Oh well... I'll see what I can do. It might be that I'll have to skip the competition altogether.

Sebastian will do the voting all by himself to my knowledge. I'm quite eager to hear about the results. There was 29 entries IIRC so it will take a bit time to judge all of them.

Actually, the judging will be done by a small panel of people from Australia, Sweden and Japan. I am not on the judging panel.

I would appreciate if all tracks submitted were disclosed to the public, not only the winning one(s).

Regardless of how well my song fares in the competition, I will post the mp3 here and probably on my website as well. http://mutherpluckin-b.com
I hope other people here will do the same.

I'd prefer to download to listen offline. Here's links, let me know if that's unwanted:

It's not unwanted at all - although I will be posting my favourite 10 picks as a .zip archive once the judging has been completed.

I am happy to announce the winner of this SEGA Music Competition: Rush Coil with the track "Blast Processing"!

Here are some comments from the judges (who were from Australia, Japan and Sweden):

"This track has a couple of things that make it really stand out, firstly its sense of space through the use of panning and reverb is really nice and whilst not purist in a hardware sense it still has incredibly creative uses of the core sounds of the sega consoles. Secondly the song has a nice sense of structure introducing and reworking themes in a way that it is never too repetitive but remains familiar."

"I really like this song"

"Beautifully detailed composition within a restricted medium."

Listen to all of the entries here: http://milkcrate.com.au/sega_comp/

Congratulations once again go out to Rush Coil! I wish him the best, and I hope that he enjoys my SEGA Master System MIDI Interface. Honorary mentions go out to the entries by Rei Yano and Turbo Crash!

Thanks to everyone that participated, and a special thanks to all the judges for the amount of effort and time put into adjudicating the entries.

Thanks for the competition!
Quite a few interesting contributions there!

Here is my track again if anyone wants to download:
http://www.update.uu.se/~lidbjork/nintendo_slask/MutherpluckinB_-_Devastation.mp3
It's a rock 'n' roll cover with vocals from the SMS game Powerstrike (Aleste). That's me on guitars, bass, keyboards, sampled drums, percussion and vocals.
The song was very inspired by Velvet Underground, Bowie, Rolling Stones and Chuck Berry.

Lyrics can be viewed here:

I regret not entering this in the end... Maybe next time. It was good Seb didn't do the voting as we are good friends IRL. Hey Seb :D lets go to the Vegie Garden sometime soon!
