Hi guys. how's everybody doing?
After a major hardware upgrade & a massive 'spring' cleaning of my roms I decided to try several emulators/roms to spot any behavior changes with emulators & my new video card. It didn't take me too long to see that MEKA finally ran in 512x384 doubled 60Hz... I mean, My older video card never wanted to so I was forced yo use Dega and/or eSMS. Not that those two emulators are bad, but nothing can beat a perfect fullscreen with digital FM ;p... So, Like I was saying I was happy playing with MEKA again. A few games after I tried the japanese version of Kenseiden for the first time (I know I know Heliophobe!!! ;p ) &, To my surprise Hayato's Hair was 'blond' instead of black & his pants was orange instead of red? Now im not complaining about the orange pants, but a blond samurai in a Japanese game?
Maybe they got mixed up in 1988 & shipped us the Japanese version & they got stuck with the 'US Barbie blond' samurai instead?
Hummmm..........

Well, it looks to me like he has brown hair, but is wearing an orange headdress. In the export version his hair is black and he's wearing a grey headdress.
That comes down to a difference in the sprite palette between the Japanese and export versions. Two color spots that are black and grey on the export version are orange and dark red-brown and orange in the Japanese version. Some other sprites also use those colors and are affected by the differences. The floating skulls, for instance, seem more 'on fire' in the Japanese version than the export version.
Why they changed it I can't say. People just liked it better that way.

Hummm.... Take a look at this : http://www.smspower.org/scans/sms/scans/k/kenseiden-front2.jpg
No doubt : the dude's Barbie blond. Now unless 'Salon selectives' was invented in feudal japan, Hayato's hair is wrong : Aren't all Japanese supposed to have black hair?
So, Hayato is straight from James clavel's book Gaijin? Hummm.....
Anyway, US or Japanese, Kenseiden is the BEST sms game ever! (well for me anyway)...
My 2 cents.

Chestnut brown to black, mostly. . Sun exposure can lighten hair as well. But you're right, that picture on the front cover is very close to blonde. It could be a case of the cover artist also mistaking the orange head covering as blonde highlights.
Or maybe he is supposed to have yellow or orange hair. Such things are not uncommon in Japanese animation, of course, and the Last Blade series of fighting games have brown haired samurais that turn blonde when "awakened" (powered up). There might be something to that effect in Japanese legend, or maybe the Last Blade character designers just watch too much Dragon Ball Z.
I don't think I've ever played all the way through the Japanese version of Kenseiden, so I don't know if he's blonde in the ending or not.

I did a couple times, and I'm pretty sure he does.
