Music file name
The filename must be in the form:
- Game Name - ## - Track Title.vgm
General rules:
- Names must be based on the files' tags.
- The filename must contain only upper and lower case Roman characters (with no accents), numbers and punctuation that is generally safe across operating systems.
- Acceptable punctuation:
'!,.
- Unacceptable punctuation:
*?"\/:<>|
- Use three dots
...
not ellipses …
- The dot before the extension does not count as a dot in the title: "Wonder Boy III - 03 - And Now....vgm"
- Punctuation conversion rules:
- : to (spaced) -, e.g. "Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars" -> "Alex Kidd - The Lost Stars"
- " to ', e.g. "James "Buster" Douglas Boxing" -> "James 'Buster' Douglas Boxing"
Game Name rules:
- The game name should have subtitles removed from the filename (but not from the tags) if it doesn't conflict with other Sega Master System games:
- "Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap" becomes "Wonder Boy III", because the III is good enough to differentiate from other Wonder Boy titles.
- Games in a series may use the subtitle if needed to avoid confusions:
- "Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars" becomes "Alex Kidd - The Lost Stars", not "Alex Kidd", because there are many different Alex Kidd games.
- "The" style prefixes must be moved to the end of game name, in the form of ", The":
- "The Addams Family" becomes "Addams Family, The".
- A region or version identifier must be used when different games with the same name exist, or different sound version is logged. Different examples:
- Region conflict: Japanese game "Great Golf" becomes "Great Golf (JP)". US game "Great Golf" stays the same. Note: Japanese and US "Great Golf" are different games, not different versions.
- System conflict: Game Gear game "Aerial Assault" becomes "Aerial Assault (GG)". Master System game "Aerial Assault" stays the same.
- Sound version conflict: FM sound version of "Wonder Boy III" becomes "Wonder Boy III (FM)". PSG sound version of "Wonder Boy III" stays the same.
Track number rules:
- "##" means the track number. It must be 2 digits (leading 0 if needed), beginning with 01.
- The order ought to be the order they generally appear in the game.
Extension:
- The extension must be ".vgm". Compressed ".vgz" files must be renamed to ".vgm". Note: In the past, "vgz" was used to signify compressed files. However, this must be avoided with new packages. Some tools (VGMTool) may change the file extension, so be sure to change it back.
